*Mission Statement The Mission of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council is to ensure that youths and adults have basic reading, writing, and math skills so that they may reach their fullest potential in life and participate productively in their community. This is done by (1) direct instruction of youths and adult learners and by (2) providing leadership and resources to other agencies to maximize the effectiveness of all people who address this problem. |

a Message from the Executive Director, Donald Block
Founded by one volunteer in 1976 and incorporated in 1982, GPLC has grown into one of the nations leading literacy programs for youths and adults. Many national organizations seek out GPLC as a partner in new initiatives because of the quality of our services and the expertise of our staff and volunteers. Lifelong learning has become a requirement for adults in our rapidly changing world. We are pleased to be a resource for thousands of people who want to improve their lives through education. Over 2,000 students look to GPLC for assistance each year. We welcome your participation in our programs. *This message was taken from a pamphlet published in 1998. |
