Episode One: The Search for Literacy in Pittsburgh, highlights a wide
selection of literacy programs in Allegheny county. The program begins
with a prologue about how instructors are using ALMA's TV411 program in
their classrooms. Pallavi Ishwad, GPLC Computer Lab's (contact Arlene
Cianelli or JoAnn Rizzo at [412] 454-7401) resident AmeriCorps member,
explains how the story of a middle-aged woman who studies to become a
nurse inspires her students to pursue their dreams. Goodwill Literacy
Initiative's Jessica Mueller and Kelly Kight explain how
one episode's focus on creative writing is incorporated into lessons for
her adult-basic-education students. Next we meet the instructors of Carlow
College (contact Betsy Hunt at [412] 682-2858) on a field trip
to the library. "Floaters," the name given to tutors who travel
to different neighborhoods to meet students, tell how inspiring it is
to see the progress of students firsthand. English as a Second Language
teacher, Randi Cider-Rose, explains the benefits of easy-access programs
for Pittsburgh's Russian immigrants at the local Jewish Community Center
(contact Robbie Lisi at [412] 521-8011, ext. 225) Other stops on
the search for literacy in Pittsburgh include Goodwill's Literacy Initiative,
(Contact Shelli Glanz or Peggy Schauer at [412] 350-2307), The GPLC
Technology Center, and the GPLC tutor-training program, where dozens of
local volunteer tutors develop skills to help new adult learners. *Meet
